The Rats of Society

by: Rufo-Tigs Tidalgo

Sailors said that rats have keen perception when the ship is about to sink. They jump overboard before it happens. Before Marcos fell, the big rats in his administration bailed out to secured ground ahead of time.

Amazingly, the rats in Gloria's watch are not moving out to safer haven. True that there were departures, but they have not started burying treasures somewhere. This is a sign that although the sailing is on turbulent water, she stays afloat.

It is not to excuse blame, but to accept reality that the right choice today is to maintain status quo. Otherwise, we could again be jumping off the boiling pot and into the flame. It's difficult to find suited replacement. There is no righteous person around. We just have to wait until changes by constitutional definition are correctly applied.

So the usual goes on and the intensity of corruption increases in fold. Lately, the palace somehow ventured into big kill by bartering the country piece by piece to a naughty neighbor where human right is deemed only as petty nuisances. Some call it treason, but people in power insist that this arrangement is purely business.

Maybe it is. But do the people have any say on this? After all, it's their country too. We are talking of an area almost 143,000 square kilometres off Palawan. Part of it is unquestionably Philippine territory for it is not included in the current controversy about Spratley's ownership claims. Giving the Chinese exploratory rights endanger our sovereignty and also trigger international argument. Uncle Sam for sure is not happy. Evidently, he wants to do it himself. The great uncle is disenchanted knowing that China is hardly a friend when things go nasty in the world.

Experts say that this is not a matter of if but when. China's massive military expansion worries the Americans. Assuming normal trend, China replaces the United States as number one world power in less time expected. Obviously, peace is hard to find when these tough guys are on the same block. We will surely experience an acute headache when their push comes to shove for neutrality option will never ever be our luxury.

A mathematician is said to have computed that if all the Chinese in the world assembles together in one place, climb up a fence six feet high and simultaneously jump to the ground, the force of impact is enough to twist our planet out of orbit. Suffice to say that what we are dealing with is enormously big that could swallow us alive in one gulp. We are forging a deal with a dragon in heat.

We should be mindful that to buddy-buddy with a mischievous giant is not a smart thing to do. To be polite is different. But to put our chips on line connotes uneasiness especially when the sovereignty of our country is in it. It is wise to think that when they start jumping up and down, they are apt to something aside from celebrating the year of the rat. They could also be viewing to expand dominion beyond Binondo and Ongpin. This kind of story was common before Pearl and we don't want history to repeat.

It doesn't need the logic of Sherlock to suppose connection between the Spratley agreement with the eight billion dollars available loan until 2010. This huge amount is intended for development projects in the Philippines. As everything has its price and though with high consequences, the exchange may have some peculiar merits regardless. It helps the poor by way of employment.

However, it's either by original design or chance that the rats in power have different ideas. They desire to divert hefty slices for themselves. It is supposed to be clean with absolutely without echoes. But obsession overcomes geed for each to have more and farther more. It apparently burst into chaos like a bunch of crocodiles fighting for bigger bites of the meat thrown into the pool.

Then suddenly everyone is a saint by calling others sinners. Under guises of conscience reckoning, dramatic tear-jerking pronouncement hit the news. Some are fooled to call them courageous, while the informed admires them for good acting. The bottom line is that all of them are crooks; scavengers that victimize people to agonizing misery. They should be all hung by their nuts to dry.

President Cong Dadong, a man noted for his honesty must be turning over in his grave today wondering where he went wrong as a father. From humble living, he raised his family decently expecting his daughter to emulate the virtue of his wife. He surely is disappointed for his daughter inherited none other than her mother's vital measurement.

It is sad to admit that the country is in the hands of unprincipled people. The crying of the hungry is unheard. The wailing of the helpless is ignored and voices from the learned are unheeded. It's a tale of sorrowful tomorrows. The present fails to provide better future as it was then from the past. There is no prospect to a bright sunrise. No hope to cling on and neither candle to light the way. Yes, tyrant's greed devours their opportunity.

How far worst can it be?
