- Connect to your Internet Provider
- If you dont have any IRC clients, then
you need to download either PIRCH or MIRC
from the web...Use a web browser to download...
MIRC is at http://www.mirc.com/
PIRCH is at http://www.pirch.com/
(if you have win95/NT download the 32 bit
version, if you have win3.1, download the
16bit version)
- Run the self installing PIRCH or MIRC by double-clicking on
the file you just downloaded. Just follow the
install instructions...at this time, just take
whatever the default values are during the install...
- While still connected to your Internet provider,
and after you've installed MIRC or PIRCH, run the
MIRC or PIRCH program...
- The program should popup a new application window,
with *A LOT* of buttons. There should also be
a box where you can see the various machines or
servers that you can connect to. From this box,
one can usually click to get a pull down menu.
There should be a few servers on the pulldown menu.
- Select an undernet server...Undernet servers have
undernet.org at the end of the server name. For
example, something like:
sandiego.ca.us.undernet.org
okc.ok.us.undernet.org
vancouver.bc.ca.undernet.org
there are a LOT more servers out there....
anything with an undernet.org at the end is an
undernet network server..
- Once you have an undernet server chosen, you can connect
to it by clicking the CONNECT or LOGIN button somewhere
in the window. For PIRCH (which I use), the login button
is near the top-left.
- Sometimes another window pops up after the LOGIN
button is clicked....answer any of the fields in
this new window and click a connect button....
- Usually the undernet server you first chose is not available...
you may have to try many undernet servers to finally
get connected...
- once you see a successful connect (a bunch of messages appear),
you can join a chat room by typing
in PIRCH: /JOIN BUTUAN
in MIRC: /JOIN #BUTUAN
you need to type the above in your connected window...
- if you get a 'successful' /join, you will get a new
window where you may see some people chatting on screen...
but sometimes you may only see a user called @W...
@W is a program that 'watches' over the #butuan channel...
if there are others there chatting, just cut in and say
hello and maybe intro yourself....we somehow dont like
chatters who try to have that "mysterious epek" or
"incognito"....heheheh...but of course, you dont
have to intro yourself if you dont want....also,
some IRCers on #butuan have the "power" to kick and
ban someone from #butuan (me being one of them hehehe)...
as a general policy, we try to keep the channel informal
and yet "clean"....
- If you are on #butuan, and you dont know what to type...
just ask for me....I am usually on the channel using
RVA as my nickname (though at times, i've been known to
use some other nickname hehehe)....GOOD LUCK and hope to
see you in #Butuan soon...
